Blooming in the Desert

Raqqa, a city of countless empires over the centuries, has witnessed profound political, social and  cultural changes in recent years. Conquered and subdued by the Islamic Caliphate in 2013, Raqqa  lived under the violence and control of the Islamic State and was finally liberated by the Syrian  Democratic Forces in 2017. This is the story of three women who have lived through the Ba’ath  regime, the rise and fall of the Islamic Caliphate and who now put all their hopes and energies into  building a democratic alternative to war and fundamentalism.

Io non sono Islam

Islam Mitat -a young moroccan woman from Oujda- dreams to study abroad, to start a career and then maybe a family. She’s 19 years old and believes in true love. She sees London as the place where all her dreams can come true: she wants to study fashion design there. Her father is a policeman, her mother a housewife; despite being moderate musilims they would never let her leave her household until she is married. Islam is supported and loved by her parents, but she knows that if she wants to follow her ambitions she needs to find a husband first. Which is why she signs up on a popular online meeting platform where she meets Ahmed, a promising young Afghani man with a British passport, who seems to be aligned to her mindset and taste. Shortly after, Ahmed flies to Morocco to propose to marry her. At first, Islam’s father was skeptical, after a background check he gave his blessing. The couple flew to Afghanistan to meet his family. Then Ahmed proposes to go to Turkey for their honeymoon. She accepts and soon she finds herself in an impossible situation, her husband joined ISIS. What she thought would be a normal holiday, became a nightmare lasting three years.

I Am the Revolution

“I am the Revolution” is a  documentary about three women fighting for freedom and gender equality – Selay Ghaffar, Rojda Felat, and Yanar Mohammed- while living in three of the worst countries in the world for women: Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. Each country reflects the groundwell of feminist revolutions: political revolution in Afghanistan, armed in Syria, and grassroots activism in Iraq. Taking a journalistic approach, the film challenges the images of veiled, silent, and timid women in the Middle East and instead shows the strength of women rising up on the frontlines, in remote villages, and in city streets, to claim their voice and their rights

Our War

Why do people join a foreign militia to fight a war that is not theirs? This was one the main questions we asked ourselves when we started thinking about this project. With Claudio Jampaglia and Bruno Chiravalloti — co-directors with me — we tried to answer but that wasn’t enough. We  wanted to go further, and take a step in an unknown direction. We started thinking of  the war in Syria in a different way and that it was way closer than anyone in Western world wanted to admit. As we went deeper into the subject of foreigners joining the battle against the so-called Islamic State, we decided not to take a stand on their decision but leave that judgement on the public.

The result of 14 months of work is Our War, a 68 minutes documentary which was presented at the 73 edition of the Venice Film Festival.
